Another Day, Another Rushpubliscum “Values” Pedophile

There are so many of these targets I have to choose carefully when I decide to fire at one of them. Today, Kevin Garn gets the arrows because of who he was; the Majority Leader of the Utah House.

Garn follows a pattern here that is familiar to anyone who has spent much time watching “Values” Rushpubliscums like, for instance, “Hot Jack” Ensign of Nevada, or “Diaper Dave” Vitter. First, they deny everything. When evidence appears that they’ve been paying people off for SOMETHING, then they admit just a wee bit. And finally, people on the other side of the story begin to talk, and we finally get a feel for what REALLY went on.

But Garn is worse than either Vitter or Ensign were. Much worse. He wrecked the life of a teenage girl half his age, and she had no friends anywhere-not even in the Church that is supposed to be all about the children and living your life in a righteous way.

As a Lamanite, I have precious little use for the LDS Church to begin with, but I’ll tell you…. this makes my blood boil. And given that Garn paid this young woman $150,000.00, I’m not having much trouble believing her story.

Check it out for yourself. I’ll bet you believe her too, unless you’re an IOKIYAR Rushpubliscum.

Cheryl Maher, the New Hampshire woman who says she had an affair with Layton Rep. Kevin Garn in 1985 and was paid $150,000 to keep her secret, says Garn is lying about a naked hot tub encounter between them when she was 15 and he was 30.

Garn told reporters last night,

I can unequivocally tell you there was no physical contact, there was no touching, there was no intercourse, there was none of those things. It simply did not occur. …I’m not trying to downplay what did occur but I want to make it very plain.

Maher says he’s lying, but is hesitant to give her version of events.

“Let’s just say this. He really loves to massage,” Maher told City Weekly when asked for details of the contact in the hot tub. Maher, though, talks less about how that particular encounter traumatized her and more about the emotional relationship she had with Garn. “I was in love with him,” she said.

She kept her secret for many years, but by 2002 was communicating with news reporters and prosecutors. At that time, she accepted a $150,000 payment from Garn and signed a confidentiality agreement, she says.

She’s also angry at The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, who she accuses of being notified of the abuse on multiple occasions and not offering her adequate services or support, even as Garn’s position in the church–from her perspective–was unaffected.

Garn, Maher says, was her fourth grade sunday school teacher, though their affair wouldn’t begin for several years after that.

“In the church, people feel they can trust everybody,” said Maher, who was excommunicated a few years ago for an extra-marital affair. “You’re supposed to be safe with the priesthood holder, or whoever you’re with. And I think my Mom and Dad felt that way. ‘He’s taking her out to lunch. Oh, he’s taken her shopping. She’s taken care of.’ They had no idea. That was the trust in the church and I think that needs to be looked at.”

When asked if she thought the church has already changed on those matters since her incident in 1985, she said no.

“That is my experience all the way until now, that no one wants to believe a priesthood holder will hurt someone, but that’s not the case,” she said. “In 1993, Kevin Garn went into repent for what he’d done … I wasn’t notified, I wasn’t checked on, like, ‘Are you OK?’ that kind of thing. There’s no communication. ‘This man has admitted what he’s done, we want to help you, are you OK with what happened in your past?’ [My experience] was ‘Good luck to you, thank you, we’ll check into it.’ That makes me angry.”

Note who the Church cracks down on here. They excommunicate a woman who was, at the very least, mind fucked by a man twice her age, which has clearly left her with problems she’s been unable to cope with since. She gets the boot. And the pedophile who “massaged” her? He REPENTED! He’s still golden in the Church, who were apparently not the least bit interested in the VICTIM, who was also a LDS member.

I’m incensed. If that was my daughter, this asshat might wind up in serious need of medical attention. In the absence of that, will the Utah authorities DO THEIR FUCKING JOBS now and bring this nasty pedophile to heel? And people wonder why I refuse to let my daughters anywhere near a church! Might as well send them to a bar, where the sickos are at least apparent.

I’m not the only one who is furious. Have a look at this excellent Op-Ed by Peg McEntee from the Salt Lake City Tribune.

For Kevin Garn, it’s been 25 years of hiding, of paying big money for “secrecy,” of presenting himself as a devoted public servant, twice rising to the status of House Majority Leader in the Utah Legislature.

In the same 25 years, Cheryl Maher has been plagued by substance abuse and mental illness, even as she served in leadership roles in the LDS Church — as did Garn, a former bishop.

This week, it all came out: In 1985, Garn, then 30 and married, and Maher, a 15-year-old who worked for him, took off their clothes and climbed into a hot tub. Garn insists there was no physical contact but admits what he did was wrong. Maher says there was touching, but won’t elaborate.

But under the circumstances, what Garn did amounts to exploitation of an underage girl.

It’s easy to understand why he kept quiet about it all these years, even paying Maher $150,000 in 2003 to buy her silence. Garn says he considered it extortion, but arranged for her to sign a nondisclosure agreement.

Last week, he told his legislative colleagues that he’d been afraid, that he should have told the truth long ago but didn’t want to be judged for “one of my life’s worst decisions.”

I can’t know all the reasons why Maher, until last week, kept her part of the bargain. That big check had something to do with it.

But I do know that all too often in such circumstances, young people can bear their own burden of guilt and shame. Often, there’s no one

to talk to about what they’ve seen or experienced, and sometimes they aren’t believed if they do talk.

So, brick by brick, they can build their own prisons. Maher says her life unraveled in the years after the hot tub episode. She later married, but says she had a problem with pills and “was a mess.”

Today, she says, she’s going through a divorce and a custody battle and went public for her own peace of mind.

She has seen Garn a couple of times in the last few years, apparently amicably. But two years ago, she told Garn’s son in an e-mail that “nothing will stop me” from getting “justice and compensation.”

Garn resigned from the Legislature Saturday. Only Maher knows what her next step will be.

Garn can say he expects public humiliation, but can’t allow a “foolish mistake to continue to shadow my life.”

Well, let’s get it straight. Getting naked in a hot tub with a 15-year-old goes far beyond a “mistake.”

Kevin Garn, like so many caught in such circumstances, should take a long look in the psychic mirror. He may find a greater truth, and a far more difficult one, in his reflection.

Yes, this is FAR beyond a “mistake.” This pedophile son of a bitch took advantage of a young girl he’d held positions of authority over from before she hit puberty. She loved him. And we all know how intense that kind of an emotion can be in a young girl, and what it can to to her head if unrequited.

This no good pedophile son of a bitch belongs in prison. Personally, I’d like to horse whip him too, but I’ll settle for the sick fuck never seeing the light of day again. When any man is 30 and he’s fucking around with a 15 year old girl, he’s a menace to society.

Rushpubliscum voters, this is the kind of person you get when you refuse to hold them accountable for their crimes. IOKIYAR is destroying the very fabric of this country. When, for Dog’s sake, will you quit tolerating it?

There is a movement going on in this country, I don’t quite know what is happening but those who profess to be Christians are nothing but wolves in sheeps clothing. These scum bag fuckers from the christian right are without morals and the complete opposite of who they claim to be. As a Christian myself I can tell you it is not that hard to live a clean life, but I do not go near a church or those Bible thumping self-righteous hypocrites who gather in masses at their churches of God.

  2. JollyRoger Says:

Sue, it has been my experience that far too many of them gather together in an attempt to validate each others’ hatreds and prejudices. I distrust any form of organized religion, as they are far too often a bunch of hateful bigots with underlying sicknesses, led by men who seek power and an outlet for THEIR sicknesses.

I’ve come to believe that the age for church attendance should be raised to the age for entry to bars and nightclubs.

  3. Jess Says:

I wonder if she has any recourse or probably the statute on this has run out hasn’t it? Taking advantage of kids is truly a disgusting thing and people that do it deserve to be locked away. She’s the one that gets the punishment, isn’t that rich from a bunch of men in the church.

  4. JollyRoger Says:

As I understand it Jess, Federal “Adam Walsh” law means that this piece of shit can still be prosecuted. Let’s get on with it.

  5. Elizabeth Says:

Amen (no pun) to your comment here, JR. It does not matter what church were are talking about, they all operate according to the same script.

The church ignores or punishes the victim, while letting the perp… excuse me, pillar of the community off the hook.

    It’s a classic scenario.

I am glad the woman has decided to break her silence and seek justice, even after all these years. One thing about child abusers is that there is almost never only one victim. Her decision to speak out now may encourage (probable) others come forward as well.

  6. JollyRoger Says:

Another thing about child abusers, Elizabeth, is that a measurable number of them can be found in positions of authority over children. People like, oh, CLERGYMEN, SUNDAY SCHOOL TEACHERS, camp counselors, and the like.

  7. Bee Says:

If that were my daughter, that son of a bitch would be “disappeared”. There are plenty of places in this country to hide things.

I had to go look up lamanite. LDS are truly f’ing nuts.

  8. JollyRoger Says:

I think I was probably 10 or so when I was informed that I was a Lamanite. I’ve worn that tag with pride ever since.

  9. Christopher Says:

The Catholic church is a virtual hotbed (no pun intended) of pedophile activity.

Recently, the news of a male, prostitution ring being run under Pope RatNAZI’s nose in Il Citta dell’a Vaticano.

It’s all too sick for me and sometimes these stories make me feel like I’m going to hurl.

  10. osori Says:

I had to look up Lamanite too.

  11. TomCat Says:

Another day, another GOP perversion scandal.

  12. JollyRoger Says:

    osori, you’d BE a Lamanite.

  13. rastamick Says:

Are there about 3 of these stories a week now ? It was such a hoot when Bill Clinton said he didn’t inhale. How about this knob trying to say he was naked in a hot tub with a 15 year old girl but they didn’t have a sexual encounter. Yeah, o.k. you probably looked at stars with her then, right? The apology to the family and the constituents is always such a moving moment too. It doesn’t even matter which church he runs with, the m.o. is the same, it’s a cover for more perversion, hypocrisy and sanctimony right up until the perp gets nailed.

code words to for submission bear some irony : “national wahabbi”

  14. JollyRoger Says:

Wow, rasta. How appropriate THOSE words are.
