Republican Economics: For the Young, a Whole Lotta Free Time

I know we’ve been hearing almost nonstop from the MSM how the Rushpubliscums are on the cusp of a great big old comeback, where they might even retake the House.

I also know that it’s unadulterated bullshit. What the MSM is doing is trying to set up one of those self-fulfilling prophecies. If they can depress voter turnout by convincing people that a Rushpubliscum rebound is inevitable, then they might be able to give the people they work for a big push.

None of us should buy it. The Rushpubliscums haven’t offered even one idea for getting us out of this Depression they got us into, save for even more of the moves that got us here to begin with. None of us should forget about who and what they are next November no matter how discouraged we get at the slow pace of reform. The Rushpubliscums are the racists, the misogynists, the economic destroyers, and serve only rich white men.

The young, who the Rushpubliscums are supposedly trying to recruit, should understand this better than anyone, as we can see.

The rise in unemployment that has occurred in the current recession has been hardest on young workers, while having a smaller effect on older workers than previous downturns. Women have been more likely than men to hold on to their jobs.

The overall unemployment rate, which reached 10.2 percent on a seasonally adjusted basis last month, remains below the post-World War II peak of 10.8 percent, reached in late 1982. But the proportion of workers who have been out of work for a long time is higher now than it has ever been since the Great  Republican Depression of 1929.

The persistence of joblessness for so many people — 5.6 million Americans have now been out of work for more than half a year even though they have continued to seek employment — may provide the greatest challenge for the Obama administration if it decides to seek a new economic stimulus program.

I wound up toting a M16 because I couldn’t find squat to do in 1982, and I’ll tell you…. in 1985, after I got out, I STILL scratched from about July to December of that year looking for a job. I cannot imagine what it must be like to be young and looking for work now.

Hopefully the young will long remember The Republican Depression of 2008, and continue to vote accordingly.

Workers of all ages have plenty of reasons to keep Republicans from getting their claws on the levers of power. But let the good times roll for awhile and see how many develop selective memory loss.

Actually, Republicans don’t have anything against the young getting jobs — provided the young are willing to work for coolie wages, for whatever hours and in whatever conditions their employer demands. No job security, minimal or no benefits, of course. In fact, if Republicans were ever to come up with a full-employment program, I expect it would look a lot like what migrant workers endured 50-60 years ago.

I think the biggest thing that could lead to Republicans making a comeback is Democrats continuing to govern so far from the right. If people don’t want the GOP back, they need to do more to put pressure on Pelosi, Reid, Obama, and their local congresscritters.

We need to save the Democrats from themselves.
