They Are DRAFTING For Iraq!
Everyone knows all about the “backdoor draft,” where servicemen and servicewomen are held past the end of their enlistments so they can be shipped into Iraq over and over again. But while the military may be relying on a backdoor draft to keep people in Chimpy’s Oedipal meat grinder, Condoliesalot Rice’s Department of State is using a blatant draft to populate that great big, slave-built (and unfinished forever) Embassy in Baghdad.
This is past pretty damned sad. Our State Department has always been full of dedicated career diplomats very willing to do whatever they could to enhance the image of the United States abroad. What you see here is both unprecedented and a very disturbing picture of the state of things in the State Department these days. Nobody wants to get stuck in the mess their ditzy “boss” helped to create. Our career diplomats don’t think that there is anything they can do for their country in Iraq.
They are not alone. Most officers that leave the service readily agree with them, which (of course) means that most officers still serving also agree with them. The best, brightest, and finest America has to offer all agree that Chimpy’s abomination isn’t worth their efforts. Sadly, it appears that Chimpy will destroy the Department of State as surely as he’s destroyed the Army and the Marine Corps. But none of that will matter to the Chimpletons, who will continue to attend their worship ceremonies (hosted by Vicar Limbaugh and Archbishop Hannity) and denounce these dedicated, patriotic Americans as being “defeatists.”
It appears Chimpy can make a defeatist out of almost any American, in or out of uniform-with the notable exception of that segment of our population that refuses to do a damned thing for their country.
The State Department said Friday it will require some diplomats to serve in Iraq because of a lack of volunteers willing to work at the U.S. Embassy in Baghdad.
Beginning Monday, 200 to 300 diplomats will be notified they have been identified as prime candidates to fill 40 to 50 vacancies that will open next year at the embassy, said Harry Thomas, director general of the Foreign Service.
Those notified they have been selected for a one-year posting will have 10 days to respond. Only those with compelling reasons, such as a medical condition, will be excused from duty, Thomas said.
He said those being sent to Iraq will receive extra pay and vacation time. About 50 diplomats will be needed in Iraq by January, in addition to the current level of 200.
However, those refusing Iraq duty may face disciplinary action up to and including dismissal for failing to uphold their oath to serve the United States and the Constitution, Thomas said.
I wish we could discipline some other useless wastes on this basis.

They can face “disciplinary action, up to and including dismissal for failing to uphold their oath to serve the US and the Constituion”.
Another statement that illustrates the staggering hypocrisy of the current gang of treasonous thugs that inhabit DC. Chimpy, Princess Pelosi, Dickless Harry and all the rest of those scumbag Republicans and Democrats should be dismissed for failure to uphold their oaths to serve the US and the Constitution.
Evidently there was no room for this story on the MSM. They were too busy reporting on the next fascist president’s star studded birthday bash. I did see it reported on the BBC, however.

Wouldn’t it be sweet if they all resigned?

It popped into my head just reading the post title , that this back door stuff is one to staive off citizen revolt. though i did expect millions in the street yesterday NOT 100s of thousands. see i think we are headed to a severe financial DEpression , or whatever Orwellian speak they come with to call it -BUT if there is spreading WAR – well people will be caught up looking at other things while the real reasons for our economic decline are left un addressed. IF the Neo’s libs and cons continuing warring like this. ..i hate to say it BUT think there should be a draft..ONLY so that the people wake up to what is going on – it is also horrendously unjust to have a volunteer military and abuse them so badly. ABUSE THEM yes – this is what they are doing. And the damage from these extended tours is going to haunt the country for a good 40-50 yrs just like Vietnam does. These people are going to be so traumatized and broken. AND for what – OIL , none of this was EVER necessary. “pre emptive war” based on lies – why O why are there not impeachment hearings. Personally i would never want to join the military – in fact i have a negitive view of it. But surely if it has to exist – it should exist ONLY for DEFENSE. And those who joined , as a last resort or to do something they felt heroic..i cannot blame them – i would like to see them helped. What a fookin mess. And where the hell is the oppositon party ???

proudprogressive, I don’t think there is any other way to get to those yellow-magnet, FOX-swilling “patriots” myself. Until we bring Iraq to Chip and Buffy, they and their parents are going to continue to sing the Comrade Chimpy songs.

proudprogressive, here is your Democratic “leadership” and precisely why I remain a registered non-partisan.

House Speaker Nancy Pelosi was in a determinedly good mood when she sat down to lunch with reporters yesterday. But her spirits soured instantly when somebody asked about the anger of the Democratic “base” over her failure to end the war in Iraq.
“Look,” she said, the chicken breast on her plate untouched. “I had, for five months, people sitting outside my home, going into my garden in San Francisco, angering neighbors, hanging their clothes from trees, building all kinds of things — Buddhas? I don’t know what they were — couches, sofas, chairs, permanent living facilities on my front sidewalk.”
Unsmilingly, she continued: “If they were poor and they were sleeping on my sidewalk, they would be arrested for loitering, but because they have ‘Impeach Bush’ across their chest, it’s the First Amendment.”
“We have to make responsible decisions in the Congress that are not driven by the dissatisfaction of anybody who wants the war to end tomorrow,” Pelosi told the gathering at the Sofitel, arranged by the Christian Science Monitor. Though crediting activists for their “passion,” Pelosi called it “a waste of time” for them to target Democrats. “They are advocates,” she said. “We are leaders.”
If she is the leader, why doesn’t she lead??
Pelosi admitted no mistakes and claimed no regrets as she reflected on her first session in the speaker’s chair. “I’m very proud of the work of this Congress,” she declared. Evidently so: She repeated how “proud” she was nine times. Passing the recommendations of the 9/11 commission made her “very proud,” while energy legislation made her “very, very proud,” and new ethics rules made her “especially proud.”
“What do you see as your greatest mistake?” asked one reporter.
Pelosi smiled. “Why don’t you tell me?” she proposed. She smiled again, then laughed. ” ‘Cause I think we’re doing just great.” She laughed again.
Even those approval ratings for Congress, in the teens and 20s, didn’t evoke regrets. “I don’t like the numbers for Congress,” she admitted, but “I’m very pleased with the Democratic numbers.”
The ready grin seemed at odds with other body language that suggested Pelosi was not having an enjoyable lunch.
She smiled warmly while telling a reporter in the room that his story was completely wrong. She laughed heartily when somebody mentioned the awkward interview in which Whoopi Goldberg expressed a lust for Pelosi’s husband. She grinned when mentioning the fight over children’s health care. And she laughed while discussing how she has “striven” to work with Bush on Iraq. “Is that a word? ‘Striven’? ” she asked.
It seemed that only the antiwar advocates had the power to wipe the smile off Pelosi’s face.

Pelosi is somewhere between a bad joke and a nightmare. The sooner somebody targets (and gets rid) of her, the better. I have a wallet, open and waiting for whoever decides to run against her.
