The NRA doesn’t lose. It never loses in West Virgina, where we love our guns more than we love Fishing, Coal, and drinking cheap beer while Fishing. But the NRA got a first class beat down last weekend. Who gave it to them? The Bow Hunters, that’s who.

Deer hunting by rifle is allowed in all parts of the state except for a small number of counties in the extreme southern coal belt part of the state: Login, Mingo, McDowell and Wyoming. The reasons are actually logical – due to the over culling of herds in years past the DNR has allowed only bow hunting in those counties. Many of us find that to be a much more impressive method of supporting ones family, though it is more time consuming. Harvest levels have remained steady over the past few years.

A hearing was held over the weekend to address the opening of these countries to rifle hunting. The NRA sent postcards to members to flood the DNR offices in West Virginia to seek to overturn the ban. This is in despite any view of the evidence that populations are rising, but not to the point to handle full scale assault.
More impressively, as most bow hunters also own guns and are most likely NRA members, they managed to piss off their base.

“I’m a life member of the NRA, and I’m highly [disgusted] with them,” said Brad Toler, a bowhunter from Wyoming County. “They’ve stepped over a boundary here. They said [on their postcards] that the DNR promised to reopen gun hunting within five years after they made those four counties bow-only. That’s simply not true.”

Of course, the NRA sent no one to speak on their behalf. I chalk this up to NRA’s screeching to any Democrat in office.
