Klanbagger Klown

Just a few short years ago, Chuck was kind of on the right side of the right wing. But thanks to Chimpy, Deferment Dick, and of course their Klanbagger successors, Chuck has magically been transformed into a radical somewhere to the left of Che Guevara.

His crime? Questioning Chimpy’s Glorious Oedipal Crusade on Iraq. As we all know, all GOP wars are wonderful. Whether or not they were started on lies is irrelevant.

President Barack Obama Monday  added to his second-term national security team, nominating former Republican Sen. Chuck Hagel to head the Department of Defense and counterterrorism adviser John Brennan to lead the CIA.

Obama heralded the credentials of both candidates during an East Room press conference, flanked by both men and their predecessors, Defense Secretary Leon Panetta and acting CIA chief Mike Morell, a native of Cuyahoga Falls.

“Chuck Hagel is the leader that our troops deserve,” Obama said. “He is an American patriot.”

But Obama’s selection of Hagel is expected to trigger a political storm over his confirmation in the Senate, where a bipartisan group of critics has already lined up against the pick, according to ABC News.

Hagel, however, is ready to fight back, CNN says. Hagel told the Lincoln Journal Star newspaper in his home state of Nebraska that he had been “hanging out there in no-man’s land unable to respond to charges, falsehoods and distortions” about his record. Now, he said, he has “an opportunity to set the record straight.”

And why did the president make such a controversial pick?

Democrats don’t love the former Nebraska senator because he’s a Republican. Republicans don’t think he’s a real Republican. And his past statements have at times angered two key Obama constituencies: Jewish groups and gay-rights activists.

NBC News adds Hagel is truly a man without a party:

If Hagel were a Democrat, for instance, you would have seen someone like Sen. Chuck Schumer (D-N.Y.) embrace his potential nomination on “Meet the Press” recently instead of being tepid about it. And if Hagel were a true-blue Republican — having campaigned for Mitt Romney and other GOP candidates last fall — you wouldn’t have seen folks like Sen. Lindsey Graham (R-S.C.) speak so critically of him.

But Politico reports that inside the White House, the choice makes sense. It appeals to Obama’s bipartisan spirit — and the optics aren’t bad, either — to have any Republican as defense secretary when Obama is seeking to end the war in Afghanistan and dramatically reduce the Pentagon’s budget. Hagel brings even more credibility to the task because he’s a decorated Vietnam veteran and would be the first from that war to lead the Pentagon.

Hagel also has long-standing relationships with Obama and Vice President Joe Biden dating to their time in the Senate, and he’s a particularly close friend of Biden’s.

The teabillies are already birthing piglets over the nomination, which is what they’d have done after virtually any nomination THAT guy made. And of course, this means that Hagel will never, ever receive an objective analysis, from anyone. Anyone that matters, at least. I’ll say that I’m not crazy about the guy, but he actually does seem to have a level head, which is anathema to the Klanbaggers. For me, at least, Klanbagger hatred always goes up as a point in your favor.

Klanbagger hatred is going to destroy us, I do believe.
