Predictable. Obama gives, well after he said he wouldn’t give. And the children of the Rushpubliscum Romper Room demand ever-more.
Sure, if you understand the President, you knew he’d do this. Because he always does this. I don’t think the guy quite understands that the strength of his mandate demanded that he stand firm on the issue of goody bags for the rich. That’s probably the bigger part of how he managed to get himself re-elected in this climate. But standing down the idiots is not something he’s going to do, because it simply is not in his nature. This may be a lingering effect of his Kansas childhood, where I’m certain he ran into the tea-twaddler types on a daily basis. I don’t really know, but I do know that encouraging bullies with concessions only gets you even more bullying. I dread the next debt limit showdown, since we know that the debt limit is a cliff the idiots will happily drive right over.
The real danger in all of this is that come 2014, people will incorrectly conclude, yet again, that it doesn’t matter who you vote for. The President is going to have to learn how to operate with a mandate at some point in time, and stop humoring these idiots. If he doesn’t, the costs are going to be prohibitively high, and we just can’t afford any more tea-twaddler shenanigans. From what I’ve seen, no deal may well have been better than this deal. Some cliffs are far less damaging than other ones, in other words.
Unfortunately, Obama has shown the bullies that he can be pushed around. Again.
